almost totally dominant, is either going to have to find themes to appeal to that group or prepare itself for a minority legislative role.
Thus incumbent Senator Robb, barely able to survive his re-election fight in 1994, seems highly vulnerable in 2000, particularly if former Governor George Allen goes after the seat. If Allen should move in that direction, there is some question Robb will decide to seek re-election.
If Allen should become a senator — and the betting here is that he will opt in that direction and not another gubernatorial bid — he will be thrust onto a national stage and get in position to be chosen to run for vice president in 2004.
Like Ronald Reagan, Allen has always been underestimated by his political opponents and that continues to be the case despite the job he did as governor and the amazing approval ratings he had upon leaving the job.
Let political speculation blossom again in Virginia as it always has in the past. Good riddance to the muggy days of summer.
