Officially it’s fall and colorful, flavorful Virginia Ginger Gold and Gala apples are already ushering in the state’s 1998 harvest of fresh apples. Other varieties are also beginning to ripen and are available at apple stands throughout the county. Extra crisp and tasty, both of these early-season varieties have the crunch that snackers love and the texture that maintains its shape in baking. The name Ginger Gold might be unfamiliar because it is a recent addition to. the list of Virginia apple varieties. It was discovered growing among the twisted, uprooted trees in a Virginia orchard in the foothills of the Blue Ridge. Its ancestors are the Golden Delicious and Albemarle Pippin apples, but its own unique characteristics are apparent from the first bite.
