Finishing its first decade in 1998, the Virginia Lottery has brought much to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The lottery has sent more than $2.8 billion to Virginia’s general fund. It has become the state’s fourth-largest source of revenue. It has created more than 170 new millionaires. And popular support of the lottery is at an all-time high. Let’s take a look at where the lottery came from, where it is today, and where it might go in the future. The Virginia Lottery began the same year George Bush was talking of a “kinder, gentler nation” full of “a thousand points of light.” The “Roseanne” show began that year as well. Washington beat Denver 42 -10 in the Super Bowl. And Los Angeles won the World Series.
