approximately 80 to 100 students — then space needs of the high school and the full fledged middle school here would be achieved in one stroke. It is difficult to understand why this alternative has not been pursued before this. This project would certainly not exceed the cost of the high school expansion ($2 million) and would probably cost less in that the middle school requirements are simpler. Further, no significant increase in school staffing is foreseen — the middle school is two thirds complete now.
A further concern involves the on-going cutbacks in the high school’s advanced curricula. Specifically advanced chemistry is canceled this year due, it is claimed, to lack of space, and ominously, more is to come. For the good of the school system’s reputation — which affects every one, past and present, who ever went to school here — these advanced courses should not be touched. At a minimum all course work recommended by the three important Virginia colleges for prospective attendees at those institutions should be offered here.
