When tickets first went on sale on September 20, 1988, Virginians - and folks from other states as well - were waiting in line to try their hand at scratching for the first time in the Commonwealth. The Lottery’s first slogan was, appropriately, “It’s OK to scratch in public!” The first game was Match 3. To win, all you had to do was scratch three prizes that matched. Simple enough. Players scratched all the tickets in three weeks.
As players became accustomed to scratching for cash, the Lottery began introducing more entertaining play styles in its Scratcher games. Soon, tickets with other themes were available.
