Clerk of the Court
The position of Clerk of the Circuit Court pays $56,188, but unlike the other constitutional positions, has an eightyear term.
Incumbent Diane Bruce, 53, has held the job since 1977 when she was appointed after Ned Jones retired. She has run unopposed in every election since her appointment.
With a staff of two assistants, the clerk’s job involves a variety of duties including administration of the Circuit Court and record keeping for land, deeds of trust, mortgages, wills, marriage licenses, liens and financial statements.
Sheriff’s Office
The Sheriff’s job pays $48,086.
The Circuit Court appointed Deputy Larry Sherertz, to the position in December, 1998 after Gary Settle resigned to rejoin the Virginia State Police.
In 1995 — in one of the few races lost by an incumbent, — former Sheriff John Woodard lost to Gary Settle.
The Sheriff oversees a budget of $879,926, and is responsible for enforcing the laws of the state and county. He has seven road deputies, seven dispatchers, six jailers and two part-time court security personnel, according to McCarthy.
