Massachusetts, Jesuit priest, and law school professor, greeted the students on the floor of the House of Representatives on Thursday morning, an honor usually reserved for members or their special guests.
Students sat in the same seats as their representatives and filled the chamber where the State of the Union speech was given just a few weeks ago. After the address and a question-and-answer session with Father Drinan, Sonya had appointments in the offices of her Representative and Senators.
Because leadership goes beyond what happens on Capitol Hill, Sonya had the opportunity to interact with a panel of renowned journalists at the National Press Club, including Eleanor Clift of Newsweek, Kathy Kiely of USA Today, Ann McFeatters of the Scripps Howard News Service, and Clarence Page of the Chicago Tribune. The journalists and students discussed current events and the role of
media in shaping and reporting these events.
To complement the briefings, Sonya participated in h number of leadership skillbuilding activities. In one activity, If I Were President, students role-played the President and members of the Cabinet, responding to ah international crisis involving India and Pakistan. Sonya also participated in a judicial simulation, called Testing the Constitution, in which she examined sexual harassment and assisted suicide.
The conference culminated with the Model Congress, where scholars assumed the roles of the United States Representatives by debating, amending, and voting on a proposed tobacco reform bill.r
