The second annual drive to help keep Rappahannock beautiful and clean by exchanging roadside trash for money will officially begin on Monday, March 1 this year. The “Trash Free Rappahannock” (TFR) program encourages community citizens to support .their favorite local causes and groups while participating in a “spring cleaning” of the county.
This year the program has been extended to six weeks, and a grand prize of $1,000 will be awarded to the person or group with the most bags picked up by the April 15 deadline.
To participate, a citizen or group must obtain a TFR signup card and orange TFR bags, which will be available at most local grocery stores, the Rappahannock County Library and the Rappahannock County School Administration Building. The choice of cleanup location is up to the individual or group (there is no reserving roads or dump site areas, though “Adopt-a-Road” groups are encouraged to participate).
As an area is cleaned up, bags should be left “on location” and as soon as possible after a clean-up a call should be made to TFR Headquarters at Ragged Mountain Resource Center, 987-3366 or to one of the participating fire and rescue groups listed on the signup cards.
Someone will then verify the clean.-up count, and VDOT will be contacted to remove the bags. Additional trash items such as tires, white goods and such will be considered in the count with an equivalent “bag value.” -• All cards will be collected through TFR Headquarters where the final count will be tallied, and money will be distributed through TFR Treasurer Doug Baumgardner’s Law Office.
Each bag is worth $3 with $2 going to the designated cause and $1 to the individual participant with the option of donating all $3 to the cause of choice.
