Already I am looking forward to the start of the gardening season, planning the work that needs to be done as soon as the weather is warm enough. As winter wears on, my dreams expand and my gardening energies built until that fateful Saturday when I know that the wait is over and I can fulfill my yearnings. With shovels, rakes, hoes, garden carts and husband in tow, I go out to attack the garden and bring order to our domain.

However as I get older, it seems more and more often that, while I win the battle of the day, I am left limping and maimed by my own indiscretions and enthusiasms. My muscles ache,. My muscles a,che, my back refuses to cooperate, and all my joints start talking to me. It is at least Wednesday before I have recovered enough to walk easily and begin my gardening fantasies again.

Why does this happen ? Well, age is a contributing factor, but the real reason is that, like many baby-boomer gardeners, I am out of shape and the winter months of daydreaming and planning haven’t made things any better.
