Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad for their effort in picking up 473 bags of trash.
Pete Estes, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors, spoke on behalf of the Board. He thanked all Trash-Free Rappahannock participants, and gave special thanks to John Kiser for financing and facilitating Trash-Free Rappahannock. “It was a great day for Rappahannock when John decided to settle here,” he said. Supervisor Estes then presented the cash award and plaque to Buck Payne of the Sperryville Volunteer Rescue Squad.
Buck Payne accepted the award on behalf of the rescue squad, and thanked the rescue squad members for their efforts, noting that they worked tirelessly and averaged 80 bags of trash each weekend during the six week campaign. He equated the county’s roads to a part of one’s home, and said that discarding trash on the highway is like throwing it on someone’s lawn.
It’s never too early to begin to plan, and active organizing committee members are sought for next year’s Trash-Free Rappahannock. Individuals interested in having a key role should contract John Kiser, Buck Payne or Hunt Harris.
