Winner of the Golden Globe for Best Foreign Film, "Central Station" is a movie utterly unlike anything Hollywood would produce. To begin with, the star, Fernanda Montenegro, plays a 67-year old woman who spends her days at Rio de Janeiro's train station writing letters for illiterate passengers. Rather than bothering to mail the letters, she simply throws most of them away. The other star is an 11-year-old shoeshine boy, Vinicius de Oliveira, that the director found working at the train station, a boy who not only had no movie acting experience but had never even seen a movie.
One day Dora (Montenegro) witnesses the accidental death of one of her customers, a woman who had been seeking a reunion with the father of her son, Josue (Oliveira). Grudgingly, Dora takes responsibility for the young boy and they begin a journey to find Jesue's father. This becomes a Filliniesque road show as the two bond and life-worn Dora’s spirit is awakened.
Montenegro, a fifty-year veteran of the stage and the biggest star in Brazil, demonstrates a masterful control of nuance and understatement with a naturalness and homely beauty worthy of her Golden Globe and Oscar Best Actress nominations. (R-115 minutes) RAAC is showing this fine film Friday, May 28 at 8 p.m. at The Theatre. Admission is $5 for adults and $4 for students.
