I’ve never understood the old saying, “One swallow does not make a summer.” The sight of one Barn Swallow dipping, diving and zooming through the air may not make a summer but it certainly proclaims one.
A summer without Barn Swallows would be no summer at all.
The old maxim about a lone swallow not making a summer may refer to the Purple Martin, also a swallow. The first martin of spring may be a “scout,” an individual ahead of the flock intent on checking out the situation to determine whether or not the gourds or nest boxes put up for them are safe for occupancy. The sight of one martin scout will make a summer for me as much as the arrival of one Barn Swallow.
An airful of swallows certainly defines a summer. How wonderfully well evolution has served the Bam Swallow for zooming through the air at a speed once clocked at 46 miles an hour.
