In a post-Historic Preservation Week event, the Sperryville Gateway Committee meeting of May 20 featured David Edwards, head of the Winchester office of the Virginia Department of Historic Resources. ; Mr. Edwards is no stranger to Rappahannock, having surveyed historic places in the county in the 80’s and having played a significant role in placing Sperryville on the National Register of Historic Places. ; Mr. Edwards discussed the Department’s programs and narrated a slide show of Rappahannock and other Virginia historic sites. He spoke of the Department’s survey program, and its National Register program that has resulted in the listing of Rappahannock resources including the Sperryville and Washington Historic Districts, Montpelier, Ben Venue, the Miller House in Slate Mills, Caledonia, and the Mt. Salem Baptist Church.
The Virginia Department of Historic Resources is an organization whose mission is to foster, encourage, and support the stewardship of Virginia’s significant historic, architectural, archaeological, and cultural resources.” The Department maintains information on the Commonwealth’s historic architecture and archaeological sites in its archives, ibrary, and archaeological colections in Richmond.
The archives, for example, muse 140,000 files, 300 of vhich pertain to Rappahannock, that include esource evaluations, phoographs, maps and drawings, Tganized by city and county, md available to the public.
The Department of listoric Resources also proides matching grants to non'rofits or local governments or rehabilitation or restoraion of cultural resources and
