Recently, I have seen the strange, grapefruit-sized fruits of this tree scattered over the ground in several ■■places, as Lee Trott and I traveled around the Virginia Piedmont. That alerted me to the presence of Osage Orange trees where I had not noticed them before.
These fruits are a curious shade of green and superficially resemble large oranges, though the outside texture is much rougher than that fruit. It is because of an abundance of these fruits that some consider Maclura pomifera a nuisance.
Only the tree with female flowers produces fruits. Male flowers are on a separate tree, and I suppose pollen is windcarried to the female flowers with receptive pistils.
