The Waldingfield Beagles, based in Charlottesville, Va., made a visit to Over the Hill Farm on Sept. 26 to give a demonstration of what to expect for the upcoming hunt season. The hounds hunted for rabbits across the farm, and provided an interesting show for those in attendance.
The Waldingfield Beagles is the oldest organized pack in the United States. The pack was established in 1885 in Massachusetts by James Appleton and later moved to Virginia, where the hounds are now under the care of joint masters Dr. Arie Rijke and Mrs. Bayard Tuckerman, Jr. The two masters are a family member (Mrs. Tuckerman) and an outsider (Dr. Rijke).
The pack is about to begin its 115th season. And no, the hounds are not that old. The pack consists of 24 hounds or 12 couples, ranging in age from one to nine years old. The season
