A lack of moisture from April to September has caused' Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties to suffer from the effects of severe drought conditions. Farms experiencing these severe conditions may be eligible for cost-share assistance through the Emergency Conservation Program (ECP).; This disaster program is" administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Farm Service Agency, and offers cost-share assistance for providing alternatives water sources for livestock.
A producer qualifying for. ECP assistance may receive" cost-shares not to exceed 64 percent of the cost of installing eligible temporary measures. Cost-sharing for permanent measures is based on 50 percent of the total eligible cost. Approved practices and mea- - sures for livestock water may include: constructing and deepening wells, developing springs or seeps, installing pipelines and troughs.
Producers who have experienced conditions severe enough ‘ to require outside assistance to *■ provide emergency livestock • water should contact the ‘ Culpeper/Rappahannock Farm Service Agency at 351 Lakeside Drive in Culpeper or by telephone at 825-4200 extension 2. Applications for assistance will . be accepted from now until Oct. • 29. To be eligible for cost- • shares, practices should not be started until a request has first been filed at the County Office * and an on site inspection of the problem area has been made.
