President Warner also noted that the Library’s Five Year Plan should be reviewed, and it will be discussed at the October meeting.
In his report Library Director Shaffer informed the Board that the new copier, a Minolta EP3000, was delivered on Sept. 15, and that it is functioning perfectly. He also reported that the Library escaped any damage from Hurricane Floyd. He noted that a Friday Night Program will be held on Oct. 8 at 8 p.m. that will feature readings and discussion of the creative process by poet Martin Galvin.
Treasurer Helen Platt’s report opened with a discussion of Summer Reading Program overruns, and led to a discussion of the proper handling of budgeted items and events. This summer’s program cost the Library $1400, and only $800 was available to fund it. Board members expressed criticism of Director Shaffer’s payment for overbudget expenditures without Board approval, and all agreed that a special meeting will be necessary in the future if it appears that expenditures will exceed budgets. Treasurer Platt also presented the September budget worksheet and investment portfolio summary, and noted that expenditures to date for the new fiscal year slightly exceed monthly budget averages.
