horse, an Osage Orange bow was indeed valuable.

Rutherford Platt, a splendid writer about trees, calls Osage Orange "... a healthy, dangerous tree.” What an odd juxtaposition of adjectives! Yet, I think he was correct. I will admire the tree from a distance, but will keep away from its thorns and tangled branches and twigs.

Birds like the tree, I know, for the big one at the MacDowells had a stream of arrivals and departures when I watched from their porch.
