erly age. Smokehouse Winery will offer traditional mead, both dry and sweet, and will also bottle a spiced version (known as metheglin) and a fruit-flavored version (referred to as melomel). Smokehouse’s metheglin will be juniper berry-spiced, and their melomel will be flavored with wineberries, blackberries and elderberries.
The tasting house will provide visitors the opportunity to drink a pint of cider from the tap, sample a glass of one (or all) of the meads, or to enjoy some homebrewed soda. Drinks will be accompanied by homemade foods, and the tasting house will also offer local arts and crafts for sale.
The opening day Harvest Celebration (Oct. 23, 1999, from noon until 6 p.m.) will preview all of Smokehouse Winery’s wares to a musical backdrop provided by Lean and Mean. The ten dollar per person fee will cover a souvenir glass, tastings, entertainment and refreshments. It will also provide visitors with the opportunity to savor the ambiance of this most agreeable spot.
I had the good fortune to taste the juniper metheglin apd the crab apple cider. The mead . . . smooth, fruity, honey-flavored with a perfect honey-hued clarity. The cider . . . tart, lively, and most refreshing.
Cable and Hallberg wanted to “create a space for locals,” where Rappahannock folk and visitors could come and relax, sip honeywine and cider, and enjoy this cozy little corner of the county.
