Now, as I edit and polish this piece early on Oct. 5, the box elders (or ash-leaved maples) I see from my study window are lit by the rising sun; they are burnished yellow with remnants of green.
I know that I will feel outwitted by the rush of the season over the next weeks. It will all move too rapidly for me to see and absorb as the woods turn from green (almost monotonously so in August) to the hues of autumn.
