The biggest disagreement seemed to center around whether the county should purchase the Aileen plant site in Flint Hill. Oysterr Hampton District candidate Chris Bird and StonewallHawthorne District candidate Gordon Thornhill all said that they do not know enough about it to make an informed decision.
Hampton District candidate “Yogi” Bear, Brown and Jackson District candidate Jack Atkins said that the county should not touch it. Stonewall-Hawthome District representative Robert Anderson said yes, as long as the county doesn’t have to clean up the site.
Estes, Welch, Jackson District representative Ron Frazier and Hampton District candidate Bryant Lee all said the county would have no choice but to buy the property and clean it up.
Most candidates also felt that it is important to preserve farming in the county. One interesting comment came from Frazier, who said that farming is a business and farmers need to supply what’s in demand. He added that maybe farmers should “get rid of cows and buy kangaroos or something.”
