Elementary school principal Raye Tupper, second grade teacher Geraldine Payne, and third grade teacher Holly Propst reported on the second/third grade vertical teaming implementation. This team concept is being tried with one second and one third grade class, and involves the cooperation and interaction of the two teachers and the movement of Payne’s second graders to Propst’s third grade next year. This team approach provides both teachers with better insight into and knowledge of student needs, weaknesses and strengths, enables them to interconnect curriculum, and provides the third grade teacher with a full school year to get to know and understand her incoming class. It also gives the second graders familiarity with next year’s teacher, and will enable them to come up to speed sooner in the new school year.
Mrs. Tupper also spoke about the combined second and third grade reading program in which second and third graders are grouped together, not by grade, but by reading level. It is hoped that this approach will afford more directed instruction and
