Physically and aesthetically another Rappahannock exists beyond Bessie Bell and Red Oak Mountains. Hard by the southeastern border of the county the outwash from these hills has been cut by Mill Run and the Thornton River to create a undulating and gentle landscape—one that has become a home to Lorin and Dietlinde Maazel, to their three children, and to their charitable endeavor, The Chateauville Foundation.
It is not difficult to imagine the impact of this placid and nurturing countryside upon the world-renowned and globe-traveling couple, nor is it difficult to see how they and the Castleton terrain became enjoined, for they share a grace and tranquility that have proven to be of mutual benefit, and of benefit to people who cannot gain strength directly from this benevolent land.
Maestro Lorin Maazel, the legendary conductor, composer, and violinist, and Dietlinde Turban Maazel, star of German television, film, and theater, founded The Chateauville Foundation, whose mission is reflected in its motto: “We nurture children, foster art, and reclaim the human spirit.”
In the few years since its founding, The Chateauville Foundation has already proven effective in fulfilling its mission objectives. It has created and supports Hearthstone, The Whole Family Learning Center, it has transformed a chicken shed into The Theater House, a 13,000 square foot monument to the arts that contains an intimate and acousticallyperfect multipurpose theater, and it has been host to worldclass performers to benefit the performer’s charities, the Hearthstone school, and to offer musical enlightenment to county residents and other benefactors.
