• Mrs. Lynne Fournier, Band Director, recently received a wonderful letter from Mr. John Browning of Charlottesville, who was a junior at RCHS in 1955, the year the RCHS Alma Mater was written. He chronicled the history of the song and credited the writing of the lyrics to Mrs. Charlotte Nichols of Flint Hill who was the RCHS Music Tteacher and Glee Club sponsor at the time.
Mr. Browning was asked by her to be her assistant, though he gives her full credit for this composition. The song was requested by Mr. H.B. Winfrey, then RCHS principal.
Mrs. Nichols is active in Headwaters today, still impacting education in Rappahannock in a very positive way. Many thanks to Mr. Browning for this information.
• On a personal note (no purl intended), I remember my aunt, Mrs. Nancy Nicholas, who was a RCHS student at the time, singing the Alma Mater to me when I was a child.
• The Chess Club at RCES is up and running under the sponsorship of Mrs. Sherry Haffer. Many thanks to Mr. Frank Warner for volunteering his time to coach these promising students.
• Parents, please remember that schools will close at 1:40 on Wednesday, Oct. 20 for Parent-Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be held from 2-5 p.m., and from 6-8 p.m. Teachers will take a break for dinner from 5-6.
• The RCES PTO is hosting a dinner for teachers on conference night in the RCES cafeteria. If you are interested in helping in any way, please contact Jan Makela at 9878259. ‘
• Schools will be closed on Thursday and Friday, Oct. 21 and 22, for Staff Development sessions. Please make your calendars and plan your child care accordingly.
