The raccoon is a highly intelligent animal and a member of the Procyon lotor family. The scientific name lotor means “the washer”.
Raccoons have been observed dunking their food in water before eating it. It was assumed that they were washing their food, however this is false, raccoons do not wash all of their food before eating it and are known to perform this motion when there is no water around.
Communities all over have had problems with this creature of the night damaging property, leaving behind tipped over garbage cans, tom and shredded lawns as they dig for grubs, even dealing with them after they have taken up residence in attics, garages, and bams.
As people have moved into their natural habitat, the raccoon has moved right back in among us. There is evidence from fossils that suggests the raccoon inhabited the United States as far back as one million years and has changed very little.
