The beaver was nearly in extinction in Europe and North America, but is becoming reestablished in areas of the United States.
The beaver is a large rodent and sometimes viewed as a pest. They weigh about 35 pounds and are usually about 30 inches long.
The broad flat scaly tail is about ten inches long, and serves as a warning signal when they slap it against the water whenever they sense danger. The tail is also a support when they are standing on their hind legs cutting trees. It is also used as a rudder when they swim.
The fur is reddish brown above or grayish below. Their eyes are very small.
They have teeth like those of other rodents. There are four strong front teeth for gnawing, and 16 back teeth for chewing. With such sharp chisel edges they can cut down trees and shrubbery from two inches to 30 inches in diameter.
