live much longer. They have one litter a year in April until June and they usually have two to four kits. When they become two years old, they leave the home colony in search for their own winter quarters.
Beavers live in rivers, streams and ponds near woodland. They can swim above and under water, with only their heads showing above water, and only a ripple in the water as they swim.
They eat bark, twigs, leaves and roots of trees and shrubs. To protect the individual trees they need to be wrapped with chicken wire. This can become very expensive. If the trees are not protected the beavers can be very destructive.
The so called beaver lodge is a unique structure. It is an oven shaped house of sticks, grass, moss, woven together and plastered with mud. It increases gradually in size with year after year of repair. The room inside measures eight feet wide and up to three feet high. The floor is carpeted with bark, grass and wood chips, sometimes with special store rooms adjoining.
The pond lodge is built either a short distant back from the pond edge or partly hanging over it.
