mui iunait*iv, Lilt* yuuug squad faltered again on the ^ road and couldn't find that winning intensity that they've been able to muster on their home court. Prior to the varsity loss at George Mason on TMesday, it looked like the squad had broken the awaygame “jinx."

After jumping out in front of the JV Mustangs from George Mason in the first quarter 15 to 10, it looked like the JV Panthers had figured out a way to put it all together. Up 26 to 18 at the half and 31 to 25 at the end of the third quarter, the game was theirs to win. Unfortunately, the JV team couldn’t hold on and make it happen, as they fell 44 to 41 to the GM junior varsity.

Afterwards, Coach Gary Settle said, “This is a very disappointing loss. We came out aggressive in the first half and lost our composure in the second. Third quarter turnovers were the key that allowed GM back in the game. We have to regroup for the stretch run and put this game out of our heads.”

When the JV team returned home on Friday, Feb. 1, their backs were against the wall. One game behind the leaders, there was no room for any mist ikes. With only two points in the first quarter, it didn’t look like the JV was ready to win this one. But, as Coach Leake said after the 35 to 27 victory, “When you get off to a slow start offensively, you must step up the defensive pressure to keep you in the game. We played the best defense that we have played all year and just wanted this game more than the kids from Strasburg.

Freshman Dustin White’s defensive performance was the best I have seen from a high school player in some time. We played with a lot of heart and put ourselves in the position to control our own destiny in the district standings.”
