County Administrator John McCarthy reported on the status of .other pending of relevance to Rappahannock County. He noted that SB4, passed unanimously in the Senate and likely to pass easily in the House, removes the sunset provisions on the Route 17 truck ban. There has been a general consensus of opposition in the County to the Route 17 truck ban because of the expected increase in truck traffic that would result- on Routes 522, 231, and 211.
Mr. McCarthy had asked VDOT to conduct “before and after” traffic counts to support the contention that the ban would negatively impact Rappahannock County, and VDOT did so in March and October of last year. The results reported were not entirely what might have been anticipated. Though east - and westbound counting stations on US 211 near Amissville, a station on Route 231, and one on Route 522 in WoodviHe did show truck traffic increases after the ban, the station on Route' 522 near Flint Hill showed a significant decrease.
These results appeared to take the wind out of the prospect of action against the pending bill, though Wakefield District Supervisor Roger Welch said that he "couldn’t believe the results." and noted that he sees
