February is the shortest month of the year ... yet it holds many important events.
We know the ground hog saw his shadow, and this means six more weeks of winter weather. The saying goes, “If the sun shines on Groundhog Day; half the fuel and half the hay".
The groundhog is also known as a woodchuck, and is a member of the squirrel family. Groundhogs in the wild eat succulent green plants, such as dandelion, clover and grasses.
When the German settlers arrived in the 1700's, they brought a tradition known as “Candlemas Day”. It came between the winter solstice and the spring equinox. Superstition held if the First half of winter was fair, the second half of w inter would be cold and stormy. If the sun came out on Feb. 2, (halfway between winter and spring) it meant six more weeks of wintry weather.
The Germans watched a badger for the shadow. Pennsylvania selected the ground hog coming out from its mid-winter hibernation as their replacement.
