Movement of Purple Martins from their wintering lands in South America to their breeding territories in North America and Canada has begun, enthusiast report martin sightings to many organizations devoted to the preservation of the species.
The older martins, sometimes referred to as “Scouts”, will lx? the first martins to reach the United States. Reports indicate scouts have entered Florida. The martins will continue north as insects become available, reaching our area in mid-March.
The first birds arrived at mv Flint Hill site on March 13 last year and usually arrive within two weeks of that date each year.
The Virginia Piedmont is home to a number of different swallow species from early spring through mid-summer. I enjoy several species of swallows in my Flint Hill backyard, of these; the Purple Martin is my favorite and the largest.
Over the years man has learned to provide nesting sites and the martins use these houses to raise their young. Martins have learned through what is called “generational imprinting” to seek out these man-made structures.
Martins have a very strong “site tenacity” and if allowed to safely raise their young, will often return to the same site to nest year after year.
