began to officially celebrate Groundhog’s Day on Feb. 2 with a proclamation in “The Punxsutawney Spirit” by the editor of the newspaper, Clymer Freas. The ground hog was given the name “Punxsutawney Phil”.
The name Punxsutawney came from the Indian name for the location “pun ksalutencv, which means “the town of the sand flies. The name woodchuck came from the Indian legend of “wojak”, which was considered by them to be their ancestral grandfather.
