Also, and most importantly, the tower has an added reserve to provide water for fire fighting purposes.
The whole idea, then, of a water tower is to let homes, businesses, schools, or governmental offices, go about their daily work without worrying about a sudden drop in w'ater pressure or water supply when there is a fire, drought conditions, or increasing demand due to growth.
Normally, a tower contains enough water to cover the contingency of the water treatment plant pumps failing or being down for maintenance or replacement. This may be anywhere from one to three days’ worth.
So, in the future, when the Amissville Volunteer Fire Department responds with other fire companies to put out a fire in the Clevenger’s Corner Village Center, they will hook their hoses up to fire hydrants and draw their water from the water tower.
