Even though the money has been available for three years, and the engineering firm on the job for two years, construction on the bridge has not vet begun. At a Board of Supervisors meeting last year, County Administrator John McCarthy predicted that the bridge would be completed by May 1 this year. But the bridge remains unbuilt, and only this month has the county finally advertised for contractor bids, which means perhaps many months more of delay before actual construction is done.

Storm drainage remains a serious problem for residents on Main Street, as it has for the past three years, but work on a solution has yet to begin.

Pedestrians remain at risk in Sperryville. It is dangerous to walk across the highway bridge between Faith Mountain Company and Main Street, but there is no other way to cross the river.

The many tourists and visitors to Main Street, as well as local residents including children, continue to walk amid the traffic, as no walkways are available. There is a tragedy waiting to happen here.

If we were confident that these problems would soon be solved, we would remain patient. We have been patient for three years, but the delay and inaction are causing frustration and impatience. We appeal to you to personally take charge of reinvigorating the Sperryville Gateway Project, and we offer our help in any way that would be useful.

We ask that you begin by reconstituting the Sperryville Gateway Committee, which has been inactive. Three of its original five members have moved away or resigned, but these long-standing vacancies
