• On Sunday, June 2, Ben Jones greeted a spirited crowd of friends, neighbors, and fellow Virginians while standing in front of a 200 year old log cabin covered with beautiful climbing roses and a patriotic “Jones for Congress” banner. •The background was most appropriate as Jones, surrounded by flag-waving and balloon-toting supporters, paid homage to America’s forefathers and delivered an impassioned speech formally announcing his candidacy for the 7th District Congressional race.

The group cheered as Jones told supporters “A victory-in this race will be a victory for those of us who believe that a congressman should •represent his district in Washington, and not represent Washington’s thinking to the district.” Jones spoke of "his political record, as “one that is true to the core values of- the traditional Democratic Party, and one that is true to the common sense family values of my Virginia upbringing.”

Jones approached the monumental issue of national security by saying “our country cannot be secure until the •people who fight the daily batiks for the heart and soul of ■America get our full support. They are the law enforcement officers who risk their lives on the streets everyday, and the fite and rescue workers who 'Show a willingness to sacrifice Everything for society’s safety. They are also the underpaid 'artd under appreciated nurses rfnd school teachers, and the Volunteers who are always willing to risk at a moment’s -notice in a crisis. And above 'all, the men and women of our .armed forces, the best we have •to offer given to the toughest -of tasks.
