Soccer
The boy’s traveled to Central High School in Woodstock on Tuesday, May 28 to play the Shenandoah District’s number #1 seed. It was a late game as the Central girl's soccer team played the game before the boys. Bv the 8 p.m. start time, the cool evening air was sliding in, offering a glimpse of the fog that would blanket the field during the final moments of the game. Both teams were missing their leading scorers due to injuries.
Junior Ralph Pace was still sidelined with a knee injury and fellow captain, senior Garner Smythe was hobbled with an ankle injury he sustained in the semifinal district game the Friday before. The result was predictable with neither team able to put anything away and the regulation game ended 0 to 0. The two five minute regular overtimes that followed were exciting, but again with no scoring.
When the next two sudden-death overtimes ended without a score the stage was set for the high drama of the “PK shootout.” Rapp started and junior Michael Fairbrother scored first for the visiting Panthers. Junior Jeremy Graves stepped up and made a huge, driving stop of the first Central Falcon shot — score: Rapp 1, Central 0.
Next up for RCHS, Smythe made his kick and then the Central player made his, keeping it close at 2 to 1. Senior Ben Price then scored for Rapp and the Central played missed his kick wide right. When sophomore David Letsen scored for the fourth straight Panther goal, the game was over and the Panthers were going to the Region “B” semifinals with a hard-played 1 to 0 victory.
Next up was the Regional semifinals. The Rapp semifinal game was played at Altavista High School on Thursday, May 30. It looked like another zero to zero game that would have to be decided in overtime or possibly, during another “shootout.” But with four minutes left, Fairbrother lofted a long free kick in front, to the right of the goal mouth that Smythe went up and headed in for the game winner. That win propelled the Boy’s Varsity Soccer Team to the State Tournament — a place they have never gone before. But first they had to play one more regional game.
The next night the boy’s team, now further decimated with injuries and playing without three starters, fell 4 to 1 to George Mason in the Region "B" finals. Although a loss, it only determined their seeding for the next round as they earned the high school’s first ever. Single “A” berth in the State Tournament.
