The Packing Shed Gallery of Washington, VA announces a new exhibition for the month of March entitled ‘Berlin Walls’ by photographer Bruce Blundell. The show explores Berlin’s evolving landscape through color photographs of memorial and historic sites in and around the city. The photographs, which focus on the sites that commemorate the tumultuous years between the Third Reich and the fall of the Berlin Wall, are accompanied by brief historical explanations.
Intrigued by the impact of reunification and subsequent transformations in the cityscape, Blundell presents the viewer with powerful images of the material traces of political oppression, division and reconciliation over the past seventy years, and the profound ways in which walls remain an integral part of Berlin’s history and present.
Blundell, a resident of Alexandria, Virginia, accompanied his wife, Professor Mary Beth Stein of George Washington University, for a year (2000-2001) to Berlin, where she conducted research on the legacy of persecution by the Stasi, or East German secret police. Professor Stein will give brief introductory remarks on the historical context of the exhibition’s photographs at 4:00 p.m. at the opening reception.
In addition to ‘Berlin Walls,’ the gallery will also simultaneously present another exhibition by Blundell entitled ‘Natural Fairfax County.’ This series of large black and white photographs portrays intimate natural landscapes located entirely within Fairfax County, Virginia.
