The Kaine and Kilgore campaigns each have raised more than $5 million and have more than $3 million on hand.
Potts has retained Thomas J. D’Amore Jr., who has experience in running independent candidates’ campaigns for public office.
He helped former Republican Lowell P. Weicker Jr. win the governorship of Connecticut as an independent in 1990. D’Amore also was an adviser to former Colorado Governor Richard Lamb in his run against H. Ross Perot for the Reform Party presidential nomination six years later.
Kaine said he has a lot of respect for Potts.
“I get along great with him,” Kaine said. “If he wants to join in (the race), I welcome it.”
Kaine added that Potts' possible run for governor would not change the issues he will focus on.
“This campaign is about fiscal responsibility and leadership,” Kaine said
Carrie Cantrell, spokesperson for Kilgore, expressed similar sentiments.
“We respect any individual who wants to participate in the democratic process,” Cantrell told the Richmond Times-Dispatch. “But our opponent in this race is Tim Kaine.”
