With backing, The Pelham House Rest&urant was soon constructed and had a grand opening on Friday, April 15, 1960. Regular hours were 6 a.m. until 11 p.m. Virginia Racey began as a waitress almost immediately, and became a good friend of the Clevengers.
. The restaurant flourished, but tragedy struck on September 14, 1960, when Charlie Clevenger died while at the restaurant. Mrs. Clevenger carried on for a while, but eventually sold the business.
While under new ownership, the restaurant burned to the ground on August 14, 1971. A McDonald’s restaurant now occupies the site.
About the same time, Mrs. Clevenger moved to St. Petersburg, Florida. She passed away there on November 5, 1989, as she was entering a nursing home. Both Mr. and Mrs. Clevenger are buried in Hillcrest Memory Gardens Cemetery in Jeffersonton.
