Leonard explained that she has a completely different relationship with a piece of work she paints from life rather than from a photograph, but says in the end,” It’s the creating that is the gratifying part. “Paintings of people and even miniature pencil portraits are part of her repertoire. At one point Leonard said she even went through a “dessert phase” and had a friend make her several pies so she could paint them. “I don’t like to eat desserts, but I love to paint them,” she said.

Hearthstone School in Sperryville has benefited from Leonard’s contributions throughout the years and another artistic treat is underway. Leonard is currently working on an exciting new project there. What she hopes to create with the students is an outdoor kiosk that will contain two large hinged panels displaying 18 different illustrations of flowers that can be found in the Shenandoah National Park. The piece will be called Wild Flowers of Shenandoah National Park and will hopefully educate people on the need to preserve the park’s natural treasures.

“You don’t have to walk away with something to possess it,” said Leon’ard who wants the illustrations to discourage people from picking flowers that are currently on the nations ‘At Risk’ list. Leonard said she was grateful
