RICHMOND — If you thought the campaign to be the next Virginia governor was only a two-candidate race, then you were mistaken.
The presumptive Democratic nominee, Lt. Gov. Tim Kaine, and the leading Republican candidate, former Attorney General Jerry W. Kilgore, have other challengers seeking the commonwealth’s highest public office.
Warrenton Mayor George Fitch has already announced that he will take on Kilgore for the Republican Party’s nomination.
Now, an independent candidate may be emerging: State Sen. H. Russell Potts, RWinchester, is looking at a possible gubernatorial bid.
“I will have an announcement soon,” Potts said.
Noting that he has a wife, children and grandchildren, Potts said the decision would be made in concert with his family’s desires.
“It will be a family decision,” he said. “We have a lot to think about.”
Potts, chairman of the Senate Health and Education Committee, is taking the steps toward a possible race for statewide office.
He created the Vision for Virginia committee to explore such a bid. The committee has raised about $64,000 and has more than $42,000 on hand, according to the Virginia
