Fisher came in from Chicago in October 1965, saw Longlea, thought it ideal, placed a deposit, and returned to Chicago to persuade the Institute for American Studies to buy the property. On November 9,1965, Fisher announced the Institute had contracted to buy Longlea from Col. and Mrs. Richard J. Kirkpatrick, and the sale was completed in March 1966. Longlea underwent renovations, and in September, a dedication ceremony was held to mark the opening of the Freedom Studies Center.
