The run was the final leg of the triathlon, and non-relay competitors who had singlehandedly gone through the entire course were starting to tire by then. Nevertheless, Barnes found her fellow runners supportive and encouraging. Because the racers started in waves and were being judged by their individual completion times, it was impossible for competitors to tell who was winning or losing by their position on the course.
“I felt pretty good. I was passing people the whole way,” said Barnes.
Once the race was over, the “Chicks from Rappahannock” were pessimistic about their chances. They were amazed to learn that they had come in at third place out of a field of 11 relay teams.
“When we were waiting around to hear the results, I thought this was sort of silly. So it was a great surprise! I was shocked,” exclaimed Alexander.
The “Chicks from Rappahannock” won visors for placing in the race, but they have also all suddenly become very interested in further competition.
