The Rappahannock County High School varsity football team returns this year, competing for the first time with a full Bull Run district schedule. Last season was the Panther’s first varsity football team, and they went 3 and 7 last year playing only exhibition games because they had joined the Virginia High School League (VHSL) during its two-year redistricting cycle.
“We came in the middle of that two-year cycle, and it was a rough road to go.” said head coach Kemp Pullin.
That rough road had RCHS playing whatever teams they could find, and led to long road trips and lopsided losses, like a 54-0 loss to the Bassett Bengals on the team's second ever varsity game.
“I’m glad that's behind me,” said Pullin.
For the 2005 season, the Panthers will play closer schools like Clarke County and Madison. In addition, the team has a majority of home games this year, keeping them close to their fan base.
