The Culpeper Sprint Triathlon started at 7:00 a.m. with the swim in Culpeper's Mountain Run Lake. The swimmers were released in waves of people, guided along the curving 750 meter course by floating buoys. The crowded nature of the start made for a frantic scene..
“It was dawn and misty, and you couldn't see the buoys. At the beginning, it was a scrum, like a mosh pit in the water, everybody's kicking you,” remembered Mowatt-Larssen, the group's swimmer. With her abbreviated training period, Mowatt-Larssen was concerned initially about how she would stack up against other swimmers but as the race went on she became more confident.
