Going off to camp is still an experience hard to beat particularly when it’s held at the beautiful and scenic 4-H Educational and Conference Center in Front Royal.
Campers from Rappahannock, Culpeper and Shenandoah Counties ■ recently spent a week there and for many it will always hold a special place in their hearts.
About 28 campers from Rappahannock County tried something different this summer that proved not only productive but engrossing and fun.
The 4-H camp offered a variety of summer activities and kid friendly classes each day.
Campers across the 229-acre grounds, began each morning with the raising of the 4-H flag.
The white symbolizes purity and the green, nature’s most common color, is emblematic of life, springtime, and youth.
Classes that taught archery and air rifle skills also stressed that shooting an apple off your best friend’s head isn’t a good idea.
Safety was emphasized as they learned basic marksmanship skills.
Campers also got to learn about Japanese history, language, and family life.
Another class was filled with science challenges and surprises as campers tried their hand at making non-Newtonian fluids (fluids that have properties of both liquids and solids, reacting to stress with increased viscosity - runny in the bowl but solid when you hold and squeeze them), launch a lemon juice rocket, make a soap-powered boat, separate the pigments in colored candies, and design a breathpowered car or a cotton ball catapult.
It doesn’t get much better than donning a life vest, grabbing a paddle and settling into a canoe on a warm afternoon.
