organizations have joined in an effort to find a practical and effective wav to provide food to rural communities and to foster in the process, ways to keep children interested in agriculture as they grow older and decide whether to stay in their rural communities or go to the city. Thirty demonstration projects are now underway, including a veiy successful program in Chicago schools where school' children are actually selling their produce to restaurants.
Fran Krebser, who helped organize the discussion, offered a local perspective: “We are trying to incorporate a program within the Rappahannock County school system that will give students a better appreciation for the 'vncultural areas of business. Some students are i,o’ i nterested in further academic pursuits and we vant to expose them to alternative vocational areas that will broaden their scope and still be a rewarding career.” Krebser added, “we also want to show students—especially in the early grades-the relationship of this project to science, math, multi-cultural experiences and hopefully to the importance of preserving open-space in our count17 state, country and ultimately the world.”
