“The Growing Connection”
Introducing the subject, Katy Warner of the AHS pointed out that “The Growing Connection” is a program developed for middle school students and supported by the AHS and the FAO, along with a progressive coalition of private and public sector partners. Currently, students in the U S., Ghana, Nicaragua, and Mexico grow food plants using a uniform sustainable growing system with the help of teachers, extension workers, and community volunteers. Warner’s enthusiasm for the subject was evident as she emphasized the importance of sparking the interest of children in gardening by introducing food back into gardens— not just flowers. She recalled that as a child and even as an adult, “I get such a rush still when I see a field of crops, all lined up in a row.”
