Parents
Many parents feel uneasy when their child leaves home for college. They don’t know what their child’s life will be like, they can’t imagine how their kids are spending their time, and what they do imagine, usually adds to the uneasiness. Some parents have trouble reshaping their daily lives without their child in the center of it. Here are some ideas that I hope will be helpful:
• Take your child to school and get them settled, buy them some supplies, take a tour, meet their roommate, participate in any family events. There may be Parents’ Nights, plays and sports activities later in the year; come for planned visits and take your child and their friends out to lunch.
• Encourage your child to get involved in activities or clubs.
• Discuss finances with your child - help them create a budget that will work for both of you.
• Discuss how £he freedoms and opportunities available at college can tempt even the most industrious students away from their class work. Talk openly with your child about your fears and expectations.
