In 1949 John moved to the then rural Fairfax where he secured employment on a dairy farm. It was here that he picked up his next profession, grave digging. With some encouragement he started, playing in some Honky Tanks < in the area. This is when he put his guitar down as there was a lot of drinking and fights in these places and he felt that he contributed to this situation. This truly exhibits the decency of this man that he would give up something he loved so as not to have any part of harming his fellow man.
During this time John picked up another avocation that he dearly loved, metal detecting. He was known statewide by those involved in the search for Civil War artifacts. He was constantly combing the fields of Fairfax and Prince William County discov
